Nurses are on the frontline taking care of us when we are sick or injured. Nurses work long hours to keep patients’ needs met, dispensing care and attention to those who require it most. The younger generation have very defined expectations and requirements of their chosen career and so too do millennial nurses.
Some millennials take up the nursing profession because they genuinely want to care for those in need. They dedicate themselves to ensuring the provision of excellent care to all patients. However, even though it is a gratifying and fulfilling profession, a millennial also has other particular needs that they want met through their career choice. When these needs are not being met, millennials may well pursue a different career path in search of one better aligned to their desires.
However for all the nurse employers, these are some of the best ways to engage and retain millennial nurses.
In a study by PWC on millennials in the work place, 44% of millennials polled noted competitive wages as a motivating factor for employer choice where 52% cited growth opportunities. The younger generation wants to grow and progress within their chosen field, and so increase their income. An attractive environment for millennial nurses is one which will foster their ambition and drive.
Nurses commonly work long hours and it is only right to compensate them fairly and give them room to grow within any business. As with the previous generation of nurses, millennial nurses also want the opportunity to study further and grow professionally.
One staple of the millennial generation is the need for communication and feedback, however it might be time to consider a different approach to the traditional mentor and student relationship. A mentor can also learn from the one he or she is mentoring. Millennial nurses want to be heard and valued by their colleagues and treated as such.
Ensure that the millennial nurses in your business feel that they have a voice. They may have new ideas or suggestions that could greatly improve processes within the business, and considering these ideas will give the nurse a sense of belonging and inclusion. Also keep in mind that millennials are a very social generation and keeping a transparent and open environment will foster trust and community among your millennial nurses.
There are just as many myths as there are facts about millennial employees. The points identified above are not the only ways in which your company could retain your millennial employees. One of the best ways to ensure that you are doing the most you can, is to actually talk to your millennial employees and understand what they are thinking and how they feel.
